CONGRESS
CONGRESS is an iterative performance project that asks how (cis) male performers might be uniquely positioned to channel healing responses to social violence.
CONGRESS no 1, a performance-lecture, was presented as part of Communicator Series, hosted by emji saint spero in collaboration with Poetic Research Bureau at 2220 Arts + Archives (April 13, 2024).
CONGRESS no 2 was developed in collaboration with Wally Waliszewski. This iteration weaves public dialogue, movement, and poetry into a meditation on performance, violence, and the continuum between life and death.
CONGRESS no 2 was presented as part of WIP LA (June 3, 2024).
CONGRESS [no 3] was developed in collaboration with Hector Alvarez, Azwaw Medkour, Cory Jones, and Juniper Jones. In this iteration, five (alleged) men move, speak, and sing as representatives of both themselves and their historical inheritances. They conjure and confront patriarchy’s ghosts, descending into the space where social violence takes physical, psychic, and energetic shape. Part ceremony, part town hall, CONGRESS gathers audiences in an attempt to redress the joint injuries of gender and genre. It makes space for working the deep tissue of oppression's bodily life.
CONGRESS premiered as part of REDCAT's New Original Works Festival 2024 (November 14-16, 2024).
